Introduction To Website Traffic Research

The Basics of Keyword Research

If you have been following the getting started steps to make a website then you should already have started your website research and have a list of ten potential subjects for you to make your website. In the last step I told you to focus on only three of these topics, pick the three that most inspire you and then choose one to focus on first.

I also told you to download the free seo keyword research tool Traffic Travis. Once you have done both of these steps its time to start your website traffic research

Keyword Research and Website Traffic

If you are new to keyword research and website traffic you may be a little confused at this point, to make it simple, a keyword is any word or phrase that someone types into a search engine like Google. When they search they are returned a list of results from what Google thinks are the most relevent website on that subject. So what you are looking for for your own website are keyword related to your topic that a lot of people search for so that you can get the best possible traffic to your site.

searching for keywords

Of course it is not just that simple, there are thousands of results for each keyword, how do you ensure that your site turns up on the first page of results for the keyword that you want it to? Make each page on your site the most relevent for the keyword it is targeting. Each page on your site can target one to three different keywords.

For example this page is targeting Website Traffic Research, which does not actually have an extremely high search volume, in other words not that many people search for this term. It is also targeting keyword research which is a much more popular search term with a lot more daily and monthly searchs. Theoritically if I were to sit at position one for both keywords in google, which one would bring the most visitors to my site? Keyword research. So for each page on your site you want to find one or two keywords to target and you want to make sure they are high volume keywords.

There is quite a lot more to keyword research but to start out all you want to do is make sure that there is a good all round amount of traffic for your site topic and this is where we are going to build a list of keywords for your site.

Open Traffic Travis and go to the ABC Keyword Tools section and type in a word that you want to research, for example if you have chosen party planning and narrowed it down to "birthday party decorations" then you would type "birthday party decorations" into the keyword tool.

As you can see in the image above the keyword tool has returned a list of results and the estimated daily traffic for the keyword you have typed in and a few other related keyords. What you want is to select the most relevent and high traffic keywords and press the "moved to saved" button.

This will move the keywords you select to the box on the right.

You can then type another keyword into the search box, another word related to what you want you site about and see what results come up. Add any suitable keywords to the saved box along with the keywords that you already have.

This is your initial set of keywords, if you are happy that your chosen topic has enough possible traffic then press the "send to sorter" button. (If you feel they are too low then choose your second topic and run through any keywords you can for that topic until you have one of your topics that you feel has potential. )I would personally only include keywords with a combined daily search volume of around 50 or over but the number is up to you.

Sorting Your Keywords

The next part of the process of keyword research is where you will sort your keywords into categories. This is simple and optional, you can save the list as is or sort it as shown in the next screen shot.

sorting keywords

This step is optional you could simply choose save to a text or csv file from the drop down menu or you can type in a general word or phrase and save it as a set. Whichever you choose to do it is good to save your list (I use excel for this) and keep them for use later on.

You have now gathered your first set of keywords for your website, you can run through as many keywords as you like for your website until you feel you have enough to work with. I usually try to gather around 40 high traffic keywords to begin with.

There is more to keyword research such as checking out how competitive a keyword is and I will explain this method in a later section but I personally have long stopped this practice because from experience I have found that it is rare if any tool can accurately predict how easy or hard a keyword it. Sites that I own that were supposedly hard to rank have at times been more sucessful that websites where the keywords are considered easy and at this stage all I really want to know is that the keywords I am targeting have a high search volume.

Now that you have your list of keywords it time to do a little market research to find out what people who will be looking for your site are interested in, what areas particularly do they want to know about, what products they are looking for and so on
