The Importance of Choosing the Right Domain Name for Your Website

This section of How To Make a Website will show you how to register domain name for your website. Choosing the right domain name is essential and is where many new webmasters make mistakes. Ideally it would be great to register a witty or clever name for your site that is memorable and this is fine if you are trying to build a brand name but the problem is that many people choose a name that is not only barely related to their content but is a term that no one is searching for online.

You want to choose a domain name that will reflect the content of your site but also a name that people will search for, for instance this site is called "How to Make a Website" because I want people who are searching for that term to find this site, this will not only be clear for visitors what this site is about but it will also tell the search engines that topics related to making websites is the general subject of my site. Had I called it "Lauras Website Tips" the topic would be less clear to both and I am fairly sure that people who are searching for how to start a website are not typing lauras website tips into their search bar.

How to Register Domain Names

Now it is time to actually start by registering a domain name. I always use godaddy.com, it is in my opinion, by far the most reliable and best value for domain registration and I have tried many others over the years before I started buying my domain names from them.

You can use any domain registrar you want of course but my tutorial on how to register a domain name will be done through godaddy.

How to Register Domain Name using Godaddy

Its worth noting here that you should always try to get the .com domain name for your site and if it is unavailable you have two options, try and get the .net domain name or try to add a related word to your keyword, for example if you want to register "birthdaypartydecorations.com" but it is already taken, my second choice would be "birthdaypartydecortaions.net" and if that was unavailable I would try something like "kidsbirthdaypartydecorations.com" or "childrensbirthdaypartydecorations.net". In other words, keep your keyword as is in the url and add a relevent word at the beginning or end if your first choice is not available.

Type your website name in the domain search bar and click "search". Do this until you find a domain name you are happy with that is available.

Once you are happy with the domain name you have chosen, click "continue to registration"

Either sign in if you are an existing customer or create a new account if this is your first domain registration with godaddy.com

Finally choose your payment option and make your payment.
